Pitching Our Idea For Volunteers

We pitched our idea of our scenes to the class so we could have people volunteer to help take part for the characters we have missing in our piece.

We originally needed two extra 'CDC' character which will be the people who use the scanners on the audience to check for the virus on the audience members. We had Elly, Metin & James volunteer to take part in our scene the next day.

The next day:

We needed to tell the other people volunteering what we needed them to do in our scene. We really had to work hard. Ella heard some of our rehearsal and gave us some feedback that it's not going too well because people aren't being strong enough. So she helped us to give us all an idea of how it could be. I personally liked the formation she used of how the CDC people are standing/gathered & so did Nathan so we have decided to keep that, we also think some of the lines Ella used made it sound more brutal for the audience to hear so I we are using them as well. But doing this also helped our volunteers feel more comfortable to be harsher towards mine and Nathan's characters & the audience. We then had to perform it that afternoon with the volunteers and have random members of our class watch as audience members as if they are playing the game on the night.

In our feedback we was told it looked a bit 'waffely' which I get, because the scene was more or less changed / made that day. Also we was told that Nathan and I needed a more stronger and believable relationship. Also Nathan referred to the baby as 'her baby' which also makes it look like we aren't even together. But Ella did say that this time, the performance was a lot better than before.

First part of devising and performance

We started by focusing on the opening scene, which is when the audience comes in and how we are going to get their attention. So me and Nathan haven't been in a scene yet but we helped create the scene for Danni and Amber to do. We kind of threw them straight into it with giving them a little overview of what we want them to do. We decided on Danni playing the officer and Amber playing the quarantine officer (CDC).

It was hard at first because they wasn't coming across that intimidating. We kept giving them examples, I personally think one found it easier then the other but we'll get through that. We tried to switch roles with me and Nathan playing there part so we could show them more of how intimidating we wanted them to be which slightly helped. We also performed it to the class today, Ella liked it but told us to change just a few little things, such as:

  • Danni cannot mention the players 'have you been on a night out?' (it's obvious they have)
  • Amber needs to be more intimidating
  • Needs to be more clearer (messy at the moment)
  • Possibly change the set up
  • Move through it quickly and always keep control of the audience so they do not leave
